Today, the distressed look is sought-after, and it can add character and style to many types of decor. Surprisingly, the process is relatively simple. The first step is to determine what you'd like the finished piece to look like. If below the distressed areas you'd like to see an old paint color, as if the piece has been painted many times over, you'll need to paint two colors.
Loo, a brighter color for the base techniqhes so it shows up well as it peeks through the top coat. If you want the rubbed-off areas to reveal bare wood, the technique requires only one coat. You also need to decide whether to add furniture painting techniques weathered look stain to it afterward, which will mute or age the color(s) you've selected. To retain the integrity of your color choice, you may just want to paint clear polyurethane over the finished project.
A water-based polyurethane that won't yellow over time is a good choice. object to be distressed (wooden frame, piece of furniture, etc.)satin latex paint for the base coatsatin latex paint or a wood stain for the top coatpainting toolscandlemedium-grade steel woolsandpapertack clothpolyurethane to finish (optional) 3. For the bare-wood pwinting When the base coat is dry, start sanding off areas that would naturally end up distressed places where hands would have tecchniques it, or corners that could easily get nicked.
For the color look: Rub candle wax on the areas where you'd like to see color show through. Don't forget to do the sides and back; you want the entire piece to be finished. Then apply the top coat. 4. For the bare-wood look: Be sure to stop before you go too crazy with the sanding, and then wipe the entire piece with the tack cloth. For the color look: Paint over the base coat and the wax. Cover everything well. After the paint dries, rub the steel wool over the areas you've waxed.
(The steel wool won't harm the rest of the paint enough to worry technlques remember, the piece is meant to be distressed, so use it to find the waxed areas.) Wipe off the furnituer with the paintinb cloth. To bring texture to your mantel design, add strips of distressed wood in varying tones.
Designer Anisa Darnell grabbed wood strips from an old techinques and attached them vertically to add height to the room. Use a screwdriver to carefully remove all components (Image 3). If theres a wide assortment of hinges and screws tape them together or put them in a baggie to keep track of them. A sander will help you break through the top-most finished layer hechniques polyurethane and a sheet of sandpaper to get into detailed corners that the sander cant easily access.
Roughening the top layer helps the primer and paint to adhere and is also an opportunity to distress sharp edges and corners tehcniques the distressed effect. Apply a thin coat of primer to the furniture using a brush and roller fhrniture 1 and 2). When its dry, follow-up with a coat of white paint. High-adhesion primer is preferable if the furniture has a laminate veneer, which tends to be harder to paint with long-lasting results.
If the piece is solid wood, traditional primer should adhere well to a sanded surface. While the top coat of paint is still wet, weahtered roller stipple by smoothing over the paint lightly with the brush (Image 3). This leaves the paint with a brushed-on look, which weatehred a more turniture effect for a rustic or painted piece of furniture. To techniqus the finish (and make the painted surface look more naturally weathered), take the sander back to the surface of the furniture when the paint has dried.
With emphasis on the edges of the furniture, use the sander to gently remove some of the paint and primer allowing the underlying wood to show through. The effect can be subtle or dramatic, depending how furnitjre of the existing wood you allow to show through the topcoats. Applying a stain over the painted surface allows for a distressed, vintage-like finish.
Through a variety of stain colors, apply one coat with a cloth and wipe excess away in even, straight motions (avoid swirling the cloth). When one coat dries, add additional coats to achieve a deeper, more striated effect, or overlay a different color of stain for a layered look. With the right color stain, you can even create a light wood effect, making it appear like maple or oak. A finishing coat of polyurethane will seal the dried stain making your new distressed furniture durable for the long haul.
If the stain is oil-based use an oil-based polyurethane. We recommend letting the first coat dry for at least 24 hours when you are using the wet-distressing technique.
Make sure that your first coat of paint is properly cured so that it wont come off when you distress it. Apply a second coat in a different/contrasting color. Wait about 1-2 hours until the paint is dry to the touch.Remember that even though the paint feels dry, its still fresh and it hasnt reached its technlques hardness yet.

Use the wet rag to gently rub across the surface in a back & forth motion.Make sure to apply only a little pressure at first, because you don't want to take off more of the paint layer than you intend.
You can always apply more pressure if youd like. You can choose to distress only the edges of your piece or to distress it on the flat surfaces as well. Play around and have fun! What if it comes out too heavily distressed?
No worries! You can always choose to cover with another coat of paint (same color as your second coat) and start the distressing process again. Other tools & tips Instead furnitue the wet rag, or scouring pad, you can experiment using and wet/dry sandpaper! The longer you wait, the harder the paint will dry. For laminated wood or a previous oil-paint layer, we recommend a light sanding before the first paint coat, and curing for at least 24 hours before applying your second coat. Once your final paint coat is dry, you can start distressing it with fine-grit sandpaper.
You can start with 180 grit sandpaper to see how you like the look, but feel free to experiment with other grits. (The higher the number, the finer techniquea sandpaper.) You just dont want to use sandpaper thats too coarse as itll leave visible marks on the undistressed parts of your piece!*Instead of plain sandpaper, fechniques suggest youd try sanding sponges or a sanding block.
These will be a lot easier to work with than plain sandpaper. Theyll also be less likely furniture painting techniques weathered look leave visible marks on your surface.Make sure to apply only a little pressure at first, because you don't want to take off more of the paint layer lok you intend.

You can use a sanding block, piece of sandpaper or hand sander, depending on how distressed you want the piece. The key to making it look authentic is to sand places that would have worn naturally over time, like near handles and edges. The piece in the picture below, I used a finer sandpaper with a hand sander.VaselineFor this technique you add petroleum jelly over areas that would generally be worn naturally over time BEFORE you paint the final paint color.
You will need to have a base coat in either a contrasting color or stain. Once you have tfchniques over the Vaseline, let it dry completely then lightly sand over the areas. Here is a good post that demonstrates this technique: Anna White Antiquing Wax/GlazeTo add age to your paint, you can use a glaze or antiquing furnigure.

I think I will try the dry paint on a little stand that Im indifferent about. Hopefully Ill like the stand after I do it. =)I recently learned about chalk paint & I make my own. Ive done my China Cabinet & now I am working or the rest of the dining room set. Ive done ok, I shouldnt of started with such a big project.
Do you coat/protect your chalk paint projects that arent distressed? I have hard time with the water based poly & I didnt know if you had any suggestions. Thanks again for sharing your skills. Angela, Thanks for your post on mud/chalk paint it is very helpful. I plan on doing this to my pub table. Is there a finishing step to seal the chalk paint & wax for a piece that is used as a dining room table? Becky, since a dining table will get wet and whipped often, if you are using the chalk paint on the top I would lightly sand it in-between coats with a very fine grit sandpaper.
Weathdred light sanding will help protect the finish but you might also want to try spraying it with something heavier? I would just spot check it before doing the entire thing. I would probably add a quick coat of stain to the piece first or a base coat of paint in a contrasting color. Then after your final coat of paint, use a fine grit sandpaper to distress the edges and around the normal places that would wear.
Thats my favorite method. I have two distressed white nightstands that are just a little too off white to match the new distressed white iron bed frame we just bought.
